Into the heart of Stølsheimen — one of western Norway's wildest and most remote landscapes.
Solrenningen is a remote alpine pasture at the heart of Stølsheimen — a vast protected landscape of some of western Norway's most dramatic high terrain. The route from Stølsdammen climbs nearly 900 metres into an area of traditional mountain farming that has been used for summer pasture for centuries.
This is a demanding route that requires good physical fitness and some previous mountain experience. The terrain becomes increasingly remote as you gain height, and route-finding beyond the waymarked sections requires attention. Your guide ensures safe navigation throughout.
The reward is access to a truly wild corner of Norway — broad alpine plateaus, views across Stølsheimen's ridgelines and summits, and the deep silence of the Norwegian high mountains. This is Norway as few visitors ever see it.
Stølsheimen is a protected landscape in western Norway covering some of the most remote and dramatic high terrain in Vestland. It is a vast mountain wilderness of broad plateaus, deep valleys, and ancient summer farming traditions — largely untouched and rarely visited by tourists.
Solrenningen is our most demanding tour — rated Very Hard. At 11.6 km with 890 m of elevation gain into remote alpine terrain, it requires good physical fitness and previous experience hiking in mountain conditions. A guide is essential for safe navigation in the upper sections.
You should be comfortable with full mountain days, have previous experience hiking in exposed or remote terrain, and be confident carrying full mountain kit. If you have completed tours like Kraftruta and are looking for your next challenge, Solrenningen is the logical step.
Solrenningen is a traditional Norwegian støl — a high-mountain summer farm used for centuries to graze cattle and produce butter and cheese during the summer months. The landscape still bears the marks of this farming heritage: stone walls, old paths, and the names of the peaks and pastures that have been used since Norse times.
With a qualified guide, yes. Our guides know Stølsheimen thoroughly and will not take the group out in conditions where safety is compromised. The route is weather-dependent — if visibility is poor or conditions are unsafe, we will reschedule. Your safety is always the priority.
